Lithium-ion battery storage spaces need to have a fire protection system that is designed to protect the facility from the possibility of thermal runway. Lithium-ion batteries are charged and discharged to meet demands for power from the grid. Energy flowing in and out from these batteries creates heat. Over time, defect in manufacturing can result in shorts which lead to thermal runway.

During thermal runway, the battery increases in temperature and causes a further increase in temperature in the battery cells around it. Fires caused by these batteries have the potential to become dangerous due to thermal runway. These fires are Class B fires and have the potential to reignite hours or days later due to thermal runway.
